Poplar Estates Neighborhood Traffic Concerns

Earlier this week board members from Poplar Estates and Riverdale Farms Condos met with assistant city administrator Andy Sanders, Alderman Hicks, GPD and city staff to discuss traffic issues in the neighborhood. We appreciate them listening to our concerns and working on solutions. Soon you will see new 25 mph speed limit signs on some neighborhood streets. Also the Germantown Police Department will be doing directed enforcement in the area. We need everyone’s help to keep the neighborhood safe. Slow down G'Town

Wonderful presentations by the Germantown Police Department on situational awareness & the Neighborhood Traffic Task Force introduction of the “Slow Down, G’town!” campaign, aimed at slowing traffic on residential streets.

PEHA Annual Chili Cook Off

Great night at the Poplar Estates 2023 chili cook off. We had 13 chili entrees in the competition and over 50 people in attendance.

Congratulations to Lisa Cantor! Her chili won first place and she received a certificate for a free smoked ham from PEHA. We would also like to thank Biggby Coffee & Vanelli's Deli for gift certificates for the other prize winners.

Mr. Billy Brown was honored with a lifetime service award from the Poplar Estates Homeowners Association. “In appreciation of your outstanding contributions to our neighborhood and unending involvement in the association.“

Finally, thank you to our chili judges Alderman Sanders, our Community Engagement Coordinator Erinn Figg and Inspector Godwin plus our guest speaker Judge Patterson this evening.\

Germantown Up Front Article Featuring Poplar Estates "The spark that brings people together"

Among the tree-lined streets of Poplar Estates, the neighborhood’s more than 900 families enjoy a rare type of fellowship that’s not often found in America’s bigger cities. There, neighbors join for neighborhood music and singalong concerts, Fourth of July bike parades, picnics, chili cookoffs, pancake breakfasts and back-to-school ice cream socials, to name just a few annual events.

“Our thoughtful and considerate neighbors, the beautiful mature trees, the park at the end of our street and the pride of ownership here all serve to make living in Poplar Estates a dream,” resident Allison Holden said. “Poplar Estates is a humble gem, not just in Germantown, but in the whole county.”

For HOA secretary Trey Alberson, the neighbors make all the difference.

“Our neighbors make Poplar Estates the best neighborhood in Germantown!” he said. “We have great friends up and down our street that we know we can count on. We look after each other, making Poplar Estates incredibly safe.”

Whether it’s through community gatherings or evolving technology, the HOA works hard to keep all the neighbors connected and promote a sense of togetherness.

“Besides our social events, we publish a newsletter twice a year that is mailed to every resident in our neighborhood,” outgoing HOA President Christopher Schmidt said. “We recently integrated a new website, communications, payment system and membership database onto an online management system to make it easier to reach our members with news and events reminders. We also post this information on social media to keep our Poplar Estates community members informed in as many ways as possible.”

One recent bit of exciting news was the renovation of the subdivision’s front entrance. Planning for the project began in fall 2019, with early design concepts by Solo Landscaping. A design was then presented to residents at the neighborhood’s annual Chili Cookoff in February 2020. Once approved, the renovation began in September 2020 and was initially completed late that fall. Due to moisture issues that developed over the course of 2021, the HOA painted the slurry coat this past winter and finally received approvals for the new entry signage - a modern black font against white brick - in July.

“The Poplar Estates board and committee members had been discussing this project for several years, due to the existing landscaping needing to be replaced while also trying to refresh the entrance brick wall,” Schmidt said. “The ‘Old English’ style of architectural brick work, although iconic, did not necessarily reflect the generational change that Poplar Estates has seen during the past several years, so our goal was a timeless, yet impactful, refresh that has been well received by our community.”

When photos of the finished product were posted on Facebook last weekend, the response from residents was overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as “Love the updated look!,” “It looks amazing! Thanks to everyone who helped make our neighborhood entrance look so great” and “Classy update! Thank you!”

With regular events, consistent communications and an engaged community on social media, the Poplar Estates HOA is an example of a neighborhood association that’s hitting it out of the ballpark. Schmidt says the key to success is simple: just do it.

“Homeowners Associations are, at their core, a way to bring your community together for fellowship to develop lasting relationships across your neighborhood,” Schmidt said. “Germantown is such a wonderful and exceptional community with incredible neighbors who are willing to help and donate their time to build a stronger neighborhood. Someone just has to reach out and ask to be the spark to bring people together.”

Poplar Estates Front Entry Signs

The Poplar Estates front entry signs were installed this week after our approval during last months City of Germantown Design Review Commission July Meeting. PEHA would like to thank Mayor Mike Palazzolo, Alderman Jon McCreery and Economic & Community Development Director Cameron Ross for all the help the past several months working worth through an agreement with MLGW for all of our improvements (long story). Finally, thank you to all of our residences for your patience with our nearly two year front entry renovation that we can finally call complete!

Poplar Estates Park Bluebird Trail update

In 2018 the Poplar Estates HOA, in partnership with the Poplar Estates Garden Club, established a bluebird trail at the park with three bluebird site locations. 2022 was a banner season with 38 eggs laid, 25 hatched & 22 fledged in helping to increase the eastern bluebird population in our community.

Street & Traffic Signs Bases Repainted

In May, Mayor Mike Palazzolo, Vice Mayor Mary Anne Gibson, City Administrator Jason Huisman, and Police Chief Hall met with your Poplar Estates Board of Directors for an open conversation about our city and neigborhood. One item that came from this discussion was the repainting of our decorative street & traffic signs. Last month the City of Germantown Public Works Crew repainted all of our bases through out Poplar Estates. This is just one small example of how our city leadership & staff truly care, listen & react regarding our community. Thank you, Mayor Mike, Mary Anne, Jason, Chief Hall & Bo Mills!

Fourth of July Parade!

Hundreds of Poplar Estates residents gathered Monday to celebrate Independence Day with their neighbors. The festivities began with the annual block Bicycle Parade, led by the Germantown Fire and Police Departments. Afterwards, the children played in the fire hose spray while Pit Master Bob and a small army of volunteers served up barbecue. Special thanks to Joanna Young for continuing to organize this awesome event for our neighborhood!
